Bill Cahn has been a member of the NEXUS percussion group since 1971, and was principal percussionist in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1968 to 1995. Born in Philadelphia in 1946, Bill has performed with conductors, composers, ensembles, and artists representing diverse musical styles - Chet Atkins, John Cage, Aaron Copland, Chuck Mangione, Mitch Miller, Seiji Ozawa, Steve Reich, Doc Severensen, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, and Paul Winter. He has conducted programs with symphony orchestras, and his compositions for solo percussion, percussion ensemble and percussion with orchestra/band are widely performed. His fourth book, Creative Music Making, on freeform improvisation was published by Routledge Books in 2005.
Bill has been a faculty artist in residence at the Showa College of the Arts in Atsugi, Japan, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Eastman School of Music. Bill has received the Rochester Philharmonic League's FANFARE AWARD (1988) for a significant contribution to music education in Rochester, Mu Phi Epsilon's MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD (1993), and with NEXUS, the TORONTO ARTS AWARD in music (1989), the BANFF CENTRE FOR THE ARTS NATIONAL AWARD (1997), and induction into the Percussive Arts Society's HALL OF FAME (1999). In 2006 Bill received a GRAMMY Award as part of the Paul Winter Consort on the DVD titled, 2004 Solstice Concert
2007 Highlights
January - returned to Japan for a week of concerts at the Amakusa ISLAND MAGIC 2007 festival with marimbist, Mika Yoshida, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, bassist Eddie Gomez, and pianist Peter John Stoltzman. The ensemble performed in New York at Carnegie Hall the following week.
February - workshops presented at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS), Wichita State University and the University of Missouri - Kansas City. The workshops were in conjunction with performances by NEXUS with the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.
March - guest 'evaluator' at the Music For All and Bands of America National Percussion Festival in Indianapolis. April - soloist at the Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) in his own silent film accompaniment to A PAGE OF MADNESS, the pioneering (1926) Japanese film classic directed by Tienosuke Kinugasa. May - presenting a student concert based on west African Drumming at the conclusion of a 5- week residency by at the Norman Howard School in Rochester, NY. June - performances with Pacific Symphony and at the Ojai Festival in California, including a public screening of A PAGE OF MADNESS and a Creative Music Making workshop. July - visiting faculty lecturer at the Eastman School of Music for a week of Creative Music Making workshops (baased on his book of the same title published by Routledge).
